The company behind Who Wants to be a Millionaire? is hoping a new global football awards show will gain similar international success and help it expand beyond format sales, programme licensing and interactive applications.
The independent producer and distributor Celador began talks with broadcasters at the Mipcom programming fair last week in France about the FifPro World XI Player Awards, a new event that will mix player-voted awards endorsed by the international players' union, FifPro, with live music acts when it debuts in September 2005.
"We see this as the Oscars of soccer. Broadcasters from around the world have expressed interest," said Adrian Woolfe, managing director of the distribution arm Celador International.
